Epsom Derby 2009 Betting Guide, an Overview

Epsom Derby 2009 Betting Guide, an OverviewOne of the premier events, defining British Classic races, is the indomitable Epsom Derby Stakes, contested by the legends of horse racing in the kingdom for well over three hundred years.

It’s the all-important second leg of England’s famed equestrian Triple Crown and thoroughbreds, that endure to cross the line first, often have remarkable international debuts at some of the foremost events in Europe and the USA, including the Prix de L’Arc de Triomphe and the elite Breeder’s Cup.

The stuff legends are made of

Over the years, the Epsom Derby has been contested by the leviathans of horse racing with star performers including the incomparable Lester Piggott, the contentious Aga Khan and the sublime Shergar, confounding critics and delighting race fans with their remarkable and often mythical domination of the tracks.

In more recent years, champion jockeys, Frankie Dettori, Johnny Murtagh and Kieren Fallon have made their mark in the annals of Epsom Derby history but a wry aside, that will arguably become entrenched in Epsom Derby mythology, is 2008 winner, New Approach, was allegedly entered into the Stakes by mistake by trainer Jim Bolger, a mistake that proved rather lucrative for the regal owner, Princess Haya of Jordan!

Derby trials should give valuable pointers

Epsom Derby betting should be a slightly easier option for prospective punters, however, as there are a number of traditional Derby trials that are contested by the chief protagonists each year. In fact, the Dante Stakes, considered to be the leading trial, has been run by five horses that, over the past two decades, have gone on to win at Epsom.

This year, the Aidan O’Brien-trained Black Bear Island came out tops in York, winning the Dante Stakes in a ‘pleasing performance’ and the bookmakers have made a note of the three-year olds’ form. William Hill, Ladbrokes and Paddy Power, leading bookmakers in the UK, all have Black Bear Island in the top four to win at Epsom next month.

Although the race is open to fillies, it is worth mentioning that only six fillies have gone on to triumph in the long and illustrious history of the Stakes, so punters best keep their eyes firmly on the colts instead. The equivalent race, for the fairest of sex, is the Oaks!

Epsom Downs Racecourse is a true test of stamina

However, only the most experienced and seasoned campaigners will make their mark at the celebrated Derby Stakes, as the Epsom Downs racecourse is notorious for its difficulty. The undulated left-handed track is a formidable challenge of stamina and in soft conditions; it can prove to be a ‘crippler’.

This year’s premier event will be held on the 5th and 6th of June and as long as the weather plays along, it should prove to be a cracker, especially considering there will be well over £1 million for the taking.
